Mangaluru: A lot can be done when you make up your mind and set out to achieve your goals. A government primary school teacher from the Bantwal taluk has done just this by entering the India Book of Records doing something that might have seemed impossible to many.

Nagaraj Kharvi, a native of Kanchugodu in the Kundapur taluk was determined to get his name entered in the India Book of Records by swimming in the Arabian Sea for a distance of one kilometre while in the Padmasana posture with his legs tied. The brave young man attempted the feat on Friday, December 18, at 9 AM by swimming in the Arabian sea near Tannirbhavi Beach.

Kharvi learnt to swim when he was in class 3 and was even the swimming instructor at Sri Satya Sai Educational Institutions, Alike in Dakshina Kannada for nine years. He has been working at the government school in Kalmanja, Bantwal for the past four-and-a-half years.

Speaking to the media a few days ago, Kharvi had said that during his association with the government school in Kalmanja, trainer B K Naik taught him different styles of swimming and also made some corrections in his style. “I also learnt Yoga at Dharmasthala and took part in a state level Yoga competition. I had improved my swimming technique thanks to B.K. Naik, who was an inspector with the Sericulture Department,” Kharvi added.

In February this year, he has participated in a national level swimming competition in Gujarat’s Vadodara, where he bagged two gold medals and one bronze medal. “I secured three gold medals in the 2019 Master Games in the state-level swimming events,” he said.

He then planned to combine Yoga and swimming to create a new national record and practised breaststrokes at the Tannirbhavi beach for two months.

“I decided to set a record by swimming for one kilometre while in the Padmasana Posture with chained legs. This is a first-of-its-kind attempt in the world. India Book of Records gave me the green signal and I was all set to create a new record. The Sports and Youth Empowerment Department, the Government Employees Association and other departments supported my initiative and I am glad that the India Book of Records also responded positively,” the teacher said.

Before the attempt, there was an inauguration where ace swimmer Gopal Kharvi, who had set a Guinness World Record by swimming a distance of 3 km with his hands and legs bound in 2013, lit a lamp along with DDPI Malleswami, Pradeep D’Souza, Deputy Director of Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports DK, and others.

Before Kharvi could take the literal plunge into the Arabian Sea, the dignitaries wished him success in his daring attempt so that he brings name and fame to the Dakshina Kannada district.

Pradeep D’souza chained Kharvi’s legs and as he jumped into the rough ocean, he was cheered on by a large group of spectators.

Kharvi jumped into the sea at 8.55 AM and completed the one-kilometer swim at 9.20 AM, a total of 25 minutes 16 seconds and 63 milliseconds. The feat was performed despite strong winds from the north. An elated B Krishna Naik, his trainer applauded Kharvi for his great achievement.

Meanwhile, what many do not know is that Kharvi is also a published author. ‘Ibbaniya Meravanige’ (a collection of stories) and ‘Kamala Tanayana Shatpadi’ have been published while other literary works such as ‘Partheshvarana Vachana’ (400 vachanas), ‘Neeraythu Manjugadde (a collection of poems) and ‘Nuditheru (e-book) are ready for publication.
