Mangaluru: Snehalaya has come as a silverlining in lives of many people. The volunteers of the organisation pick the needy from the streets and take care of them and make them fit to stand on their own feet.

It was a normal day as always when Snehalaya lovingly brought home a guest-a man who was in need of care and affection. However, it was only later that the organisation realised that the guest was a woman and till date the organisation has been doing all that it takes to make sure that the woman returns to normalcy.

Joseph Crasta, founder of Snehalaya Charitable Trust, noticed a destitute near Kallapu when he was travelling from Mangaluru to Manjeshwar, a few days ago. Crasta and his organisation had touched 700 lives so far and the new addition was welcomed by the portals of the organisation with open arms. After the destitute was picked and forwarded for a bath and hair cut, the organisation volunteers realised it was a woman, completely distraught and disoriented, she could hardly communicate about herself.

“She was not in a position to say a thing about herself. All that she told us was that her name was Kasamma and she was from Andhra Pradesh. She could converse only in Telugu and we were unable to understand her,” Crasta said adding that treatment is being extended to her and efforts are on to identify her native place.

“Our priority right now is to give her proper treatment. We will soon arrange a person to talk to her in her mother tongue,” he said.

Joseph Crasta established in 2009 on the birthday of St Mother Theresa, because she was his inspiration and guiding light behind the yeomen service that he has been carrying on.

What made Joseph indulge in rescuing destitute?
Joseph Crasta was an inter-state bus driver, an ordinary family man with limited income and ordinary aspirations. However, an accident at Mumbai many years ago became a turning point in his life. Injured severely in the mishap, Joseph dodged death, but could not get back to work. His wife instead had started working so that the family could be sustained. While he could not work, he decided to make a difference in lives of others and thus he started identifying destitute who were in miserable plight. Today Snehalaya is truly a monument of love, care and affection.
