Mangaluru: As the ranking of Dakshina Kannada district in SSLC examinations has dropped down to seventh position, the Department of Public Instruction is concentrating on improving the results. It has already conducted a meeting of the headmasters in this regard. The headmasters were told to conduct repeated mock tests in their respective schools and to focus on low learning students.

Among the failed students, a large number could not to clear the subject Social Science. Among the total of 27,564 students who appeared for the SSLC examination in 2018-19, 2079 have failed to clear Social Science. Mathematics stands the second toughest subject with 1997 students failing in it. Hence the head Masters were asked to concentrate on Mathematics and Social Science to ensure that no students would fail in these subjects next year.

Some government schools had conducted special classes during the night to help students secure good marks and they will continue the practice this year too. “But, the Department of Public Instruction is not compelling any school to conduct classes during the night. Such decision would be taken by the parents, members of School Development and Monitoring Committee (SDMC) and the headmasters. There is no any compulsion from the department of public instruction”, says SSLC District Nodal Officer and Subject Inspector Shamanth V M. He also informed that measures were taken on identifying those schools which secured 100 percent results and honoured through the district administration, in order to support them to repeat such achievement in future too.

‘Failing percentage of students decreasing every year’

A total of 27,564 students had appeared for the SSLC examination in the year 2018-19 in DK district among whom a total of 3624 students had failed to clear the exam. But when compared to the results of 2017-18, the number of students who failed are 4,129 this year as against 5283. The statistics reveal that there is a slight decrease in the number of students who failed to clear the exam. Though the ranking of DK district has slipped to seventh position this year, it may be noted that a total of 282 students from Dakshina Kannada district who had applied for the revaluation cleared their subjects which led to the increase in passing percentage of the district from 86.85 percent to 87.88 percent.

Ranking based on the qualitative results of district from next year?

Sources from Public Instruction Department informed that the existing system of giving ranks to the district in SSLC examination based on the passing percentage of students would be wiped out soon and the ranking will be given based on the quantitative and qualitative results. In this new method, while giving rank to the district, the examination board would consider the number of students who secure highest marks also. It may be noted that despite a dip in the results this year, seven students from Dakshina Kannada district have shared top three positions in the entire state.

The number of schools which secured 100 percent results has also increased from 66 to 166 schools in the district which also shows that DK district has been maintaining quality results result year after year. If the Board would provide rank on the basis of quality along with quantity, then definitely Dakshina Kannada district would not miss top the three ranks in SSLC exams.

Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) Y Shivaramaiah when contacted, told Newskarnataka.com that decision on giving ranks to the district based on quantity and quality is not finalised yet. “But, our district has been improving in the SSLC results year after year. We are focussing on all schools through various activities to improve the results this year too”, he said.
