Pavan Corporation paves the way back to earth with clay products

Almost everyone has tasted food cooked on clay pots atleast in their childhood. Though most of the people have switched to aluminum and steel utensils for cooking, in most of the villages in India one can still find earthen pots. Sweet tea served in clay cup, clay vessel for storing water, a clay pot, clay diyas and lot more but unfortunately plastic and paper have replaced them big time.

In such a scenario, two entrepreneurs from Mangaluru are here for a noble cause. ‘Pavan Enterprises’ is a joint venture by Sathish and Jaykumar from Mangaluru. With a primary motive of creating awareness among Mangalureans to be health-conscious, they are promoting environment friendly and pocket-friendly clay products.

Located at Kulshekar, the exclusive shop full of clay products is what you should not miss.

Sathish, one of the proprietors, said, “This is the new enterprise we started on 19 May 2017. There are different varieties of clay, for example, range of products for cooking purposes and decorative ones depending on what the customer wants. As of now we are focusing on the cooking range. Eventually looking at what the market wants, we will also add more products.”

He says that there is a need to promote and preserve clay products which are eco-friendly. “Clay is something which is being used traditionally for decades and now almost forgotten. The scope for clay products is reducing due to many reasons. That may be because there is shortage of supply. Those who used to manufacture traditionally are sticking to it but the younger generation is not interested. Secondly, getting the raw material is difficult. Scarcity and lack of interest are the main reasons for the decline in clay products.

Though people have switched to iron, steel and aluminum products, people are opting for clay products these days. But interestingly, people are realising the importance of using clay products. Today, people are more health conscious. Even when you look at the afflictions people are having like lifestyle diseases are on the rise day by day. Definitely people are choosing clay products for daily use to maintain their health”, opines Satish.

This only shop in Mangaluru has a wide range of products which include Clay Cooker, Terracotta Water Filter, Terracotta Curd Pot, Terracotta Earthen Water Pots, Clay Water Bottle and Clay Handi and 10 to 15 other clay utensils.

Going by its colourful and innovative looks, one might wonder, “whether a common man can afford to buy this?” To this Satish says that the products are cheaper when compared to others. “The tavas which are in great demand are only for Rs 50. Even though some products are expensive that is only due to their quality. There are a lot of impurities in clay. These will have to be filtered. Generally those who manufacture the clay products here in this region do not get the clay tested. Impurities like lead will be there in clay. We have branded clay products, where clay is filtered, tested and which is why rates are on the higher side”, he explained.

People often say the clay products which are available in the market are not pure. Satish agrees that there are a lot of people who want to make the most out of this business by using other tricks. “Some manufacturers in South, mix red oxide into clay to make it more attractive, which is not good for health. Even in some cases powdered wood is mixed while making clay products. Though it is not harmful, these things are happening. “What we offer is pure clay and eco-friendly,” he assures.

Pavan Corporation and Mitticool

Mitticool whom Pavan Corporation is mainly associated with, is started by a humble potter Mansukhbhai Prajapati from Gujarat. The 47-year-old is hailed as one of rural India’s most successful entrepreneurs and was even featured in Forbes’ Top 7 Rural Entrepreneurs list in August 2010. Former president Abdul Kalam once called him “true scientist.”

So the noble work of acclaimed potter is being continued here in Kudla by our very own Mangaloreans Satish and Jayakumar. Satish said, “Most of the products we have here is from Mitticool. Very recently, we have sourced some innovative products especially handies like Idli makers, Appam making vessel from Agra.”

One of the attractions among these products is Mitticool fridge which runs without electricity. It cools water by almost 10 degrees and keeps items like milk, fresh fruits and vegetables unspoiled for 4 to 5 days. Another product which is in demand at this outlet is Curd pot.

Sathish and his partner have been trying to promote clay products in Mangaluru in every possible way. They conduct workshops, display clay products in government sponsored programmes. “Demand for these clay products in Mangaluru is pretty good and apart from promoting these clay products through media, we have Kiosks at different strategic locations. So far there is no competition in Mangaluru for us”, he said.

The business the duo has started is not with any profit-motive. “Our intention is to provide to the people something that is very much needed in terms of maintaining their health. Even though there are lots of risks associated with this business we are happy with what we are doing. These pots tend to break. We as wholesalers will be at loss as the company does not take it back. But understanding that these products are good for the people at large, we will ensure that maximum number of people in Mangaluru opt for clay products.”

Satish has a message for young generation too. “Use clay and use anything which is good for health. Today’s generation does not take much care of its health. It is important that they understand we have only one life to live. So it is better to be careful and live a happy life.”

Clay products not only keep food flavour pure but are also healthy and eco-friendly. Clay vessels give food an earthy taste and aroma. The clay pots lock in nutrients and keep bacteria at bay.

Clay products are safe and better for the environment because they come from soil and easily get decomposed.
