Mangaluru: A small stall at the fruit fest and jackfruit fest organised jointly by Pilikula Biological Park and Dakshina Kannada district’s agricultural associations at Pilikula, Urban Hath was the centre of attraction. A Kerala based farmer K P Bhat was selling bamboo rice which is also called as ‘Rajan Akki’ in the small stall.  Though the price for the bamboo rice was very high, many people were seen buying it for its medicinal value. As bamboo rice increases libido and fertility, it is also called as `Vamshalochana.`

There is no stock of bamboo rice in anywhere in Karnataka and it is not available in the market too. However, a small firm `Kudingila Grameena Naturals`, owned by K P Bhat procured bamboo rice from Madhya Pradesh and is selling it in health exhibitions and organic products exhibition.

Bhat markets this bamboo rice only at health exhibitions and organic products exhibition and has found a huge demand for this. He is happy that he has good feedback from his customers about the bamboo rice and the demand is increasing.

The price for 1 kg of bamboo rice is Rs 600 now. As the consumption of bamboo rice is increasing day after day owing to its medicinal values, the price may skyrocket in the coming days.

One has to consume three grams of bamboo rice or 1 teaspoon on empty stomach and then should drink water. It can also be added into the normal rice while cooking. But, the quantity of bamboo rice should be at least one teaspoon for a person. As it is also available in powder, elderly people can also opt for bamboo powder.

Speaking to newskarnataka.com, K P Bhat opined that going by the huge demand for bamboo rice, the price per kilo may even reach Rs 8000 to Rs 10,000 in the next five years. “I brought 50 tonnes of bamboo rice from Madhya Pradesh five years ago and sold 60 per cent of my collection already. As the yield of bamboo rice is only once in 60 years, there would be more demand in the future and the price will also go high”, he says.

According to the Ayurvedic medicine experts, bamboo rice contains zero fat, rich medicinal properties and improves the immunity levels of people. It also gives a quick relief from joint pain (arthritis).

The consumption of bamboo rice was more in the olden days as people did not have enough food then. When bamboo starts flowering, people start preparing to collect bamboo rice. But, the consumption reduced after farmers started concentrating on paddy cultivation. But, after the Ayurvedic medicine experts understood the medicinal values of bamboo rice, its prominence has been steadily increasing.

K P Bhat also referred to Sanjay, a lab technician in the Central University of Karnataka, Gulbarga, who was healed of back pain after he start consuming 1 teaspoon (three grams) of bamboo rice on empty stomach. “As he had the back pain owing to spinal cord disorder, the orthopaedic doctor had advised him against riding motorcycle. Despite the treatment, his pain was not cured. But his pain reduced after he started taking bamboo rice. Now he rides motorcycle for around 60 km per day”, recalls K P Bhat.
