It can be a beautiful painting hanging on the wall, or the old inscriptions that were first engraved 1000 years ago. All such art forms in the world have one thing in common – they are all handmade.  And handmade art can be a source of livelihood too. There are those who craft them and those who so want to own them for their aesthetics and their utility.

When you are locked up within four walls due to a pandemic outside, you tend to get your creative juices flowing. An idle mind is NOT a devil’s workshop, it’s God’s playground.

During this period, art, innovation, and small businesses – from home caterers to art and craft have flourished.

Although starting and running a small business involves taking greater risks than working for a large, established company, the rewards are qualitative, including broad-based prosperity which includes several stakeholders besides the entrepreneur.

The story of colourful doormats made from waste material

And so, we have the story of Shwetha, who set up shop with her craft. From doormats made from sack bags and art made from glass bottles Shwetha Mallya is creating, innovating, and earning respect, admiration of course her livelihood all at once. Hailing from Mulki, Mangalore she has started her business that converts waste into art. The doormats range from Rs. 50/- for the smaller mats to Rs. 75/- and Rs. 100/- for the larger ones.

“It started out with me posting my creations as my whatsapp status! Now I sell 5-10 mats per day.” Shwetha has also custom designed mats for her customers.  She uses the borders of waste cloth and bedsheets to form a beautiful collage. As of now, she has sold 30 doormats.

Shwetha is a 25-year-old home maker who has always been interested in art and craft. Indeed, she has won several prizes for her art creations. “I have always been keen to engage myself in cultural activities. As it is the rainy season, several people complain about how the thread wears out of the sack bag mat, and that’s when the idea flashed. I cut out the cloth where it’s torn, take another material or design, ad give it a different border.”

The business venture that is not a doormat!

After the lockdown was announced, Shwetha quit her job and decided to start her own venture. Her designs and colour combinations are exclusive and what helps Shwetha sell the mats.  Her mother is her support and inspiration. She is an expert in tailoring and Shwetha says she has learnt a lot from her.  Painting, Rangoli Designs, and Mehndi Designs are some of the other areas of interest of Shwetha. She also weaves a beautiful flower garland!

About her journey into entrepreneurship, Shwetha had this to say. “Its good for people to use to their talents to earn a livelihood; besides money it provides recognition and satisfaction,” Shwetha says.

“Many face difficulties and issues, but small businesses are coming up extensively! It’s important for society to support these ventures and recognise the talent and the effort that goes into these localized business ventures that rest on individual talent and help them grow.” Shwetha adds, “It is important also from the point of view of ecological sustainability – if we can use recyclable material to meet our daily needs.”

It is not art for art’s sake, but art for heart’s sake! Lets support such ventures for, in the long run, they will help us support the sustainability of our planet as well as promote the well being of our society.
