Offering a variety of locations ranging from waterfalls to national parks, Chikkamagaluru is one of the most quaint and pristine districts in the state. Amid the many reasons for the place being special, the one that stands out the most is Mullayanagiri peak located at a distance of 20 km from the district. As per the old Kannada language, Mulla translates into forest.

With a height reaching up to 1,930 metres (6,330 ft), this is the highest peak in Karnataka. Reaching the top after climbing 464 stone and concretes steps, one can find the small temple located at the crown of the mountain range. The temple houses a small statue of Tapasvi Mullappa Swamy. Like most of the old temples and historic places in Karnataka, this too has a significant story behind its popularity and trend. According to mythology, Tapasvi Mullappa Swamy observed meditation for years at the cave on top of the Mullayanagiri peak. These caves are a few feet below the summit and are easily accessible.

The stone and concrete steps which lead to the summit are much modern a setting when compared to the trail which lead to the peak, known as ‘Sarpadari’ or ‘Sarpanadi’. Through the passing of time, these trails have become less and less used but it still remains as a favoured one among the real adventure seekers. This apart, the trail serves as a hub for trekking, mountain biking, and road biking for intermediate trekkers. Many people flock to see the place to take in the all-encompassing view form the top of the peak. Nestling amidst the Nilgiris and the mighty Himalayas, these mountain ranges which are part and parcel of the might Western Ghats, give a breath taking view which is truly a sight to behold.

A trip to Mullayanagiri is made by tourist, not just for the peak but also for the attractions which surround the area. The descending water of the Manikyadhara Falls is another major pitstop for travellers coming to Chikkamagaluru. The names of the waterfalls translate into string of pearls, which has been inspired from the water falling like droplets, shinning like pearls under the rays of the glistening sun. This beautiful and picturesque place is an ideal location for picnicking and photography. The place is considered as a paradise for bikers, trekkers and die-hard nature lovers. At a height of 30 meters above the ground, this place is a sacred spot for both Hindus and Muslims and it is believed that a bathe in its waters can cure one of ailments.

Another such waterfall located at the luxury of nature is the Jhari Falls, popularly known as the Buttermilk falls. The monsoon season paints a bright green colour to the area and adds to the vibrancy of the region. A small pool is formed in front of the waters falls, which is enjoyed by the tourist.

The best time to visit Mullayanagiri is during the spring season when the mountain is alive with the blooming greenery and the vibrant sky. Surround yourself in the charm of nature and visit the scenic backdrops of Mullayanagiri.
