Mangaluru: Despite some opposition to the candidature of sitting MP Nalin Kumar Kateel from Mangaluru Lok Sabha constituency, it is said that the BJP High Command has decided to field him. Meanwhile, though Congress has not finalised its candidate so far, some credible sources claim that the high command has favoured Ramanath Rai, though he lost Assembly election recently.
Though Nalin had won twice from Mangaluru constituency with a huge margin of 40,420 in the year 2009 and 1,43,907 in 2014, there was a lot of opposition from BJP to his candidature. Those who oppose his candidature opine that Nalin does not know either English or Hindi language properly, which prevents him from speaking in Parliament and getting grants for development works in his constituency. However, as per a survey conducted by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), he had secured 24th place in the nation for overall achievement as a Parliamentarian and stood at second place among the MPs of the state, during his first term. Considering effective utilisation of MP grants also, Nalin had secured top position at the completion of his first term.
During his second term also, he reportedly succeeded in bringing around Rs 16,000 Crore for DK district, under various central government schemes during the past five years. Nalin's supporters say that though he has no proper command on English and Hindi language, he has an ability to bring funds for developmental works.
Another reason for opposition is said to be his negligence towards the right-wing activists. It is said that he shows no concern for anybody who is from Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) or any other fringe groups. Though he promises help when they approach him, he never bothers to attend to them, it is said.
Incomplete flyovers at Pumpwell and Thokkottu is also another reason for the opposing. However, it is said that the high command has decided to field Nalin Kumar Kateel for the third time.
Meanwhile, though several aspirants had attempted to secure a ticket in Congress, it is said that Ramanath Rai would get it this time. If Rai contests against Kateel, it would be his first attempt in Lok Sabha election. Earlier, he was in state politics and represented Bantwal constituency six times. He had served as the state home, excise, fisheries, transport and forest minister. However, he was defeated by Rajesh Naik during the last Assembly election from Bantwal constituency.
The other aspirants from Congress are Vinay Kumar Sorake, Mithun Rai, Ivan D'Souza, Kanachur Monu and M N Rajendra Kumar among others.
