‘Life on Streets’, a unique photo contest to provide a platform for amateur photographers to display their talent was hosted by www.newskarnataka.com, the popular online news portal brand of Spearhead Media Pvt. Ltd, from 4th of July to the 15th of August 2016. The winners were announced on August 19th – World Photography Day after due scrutiny and deliberation by a jury consisting three members – Yajna Acharya, Dr Akhter Husain, and Kishan Rao, all accomplished photographers in their own right.

The contest received over 300 entries. The contest was expected to capture vignettes of street life – those emotions and expressions that people experience while on the road – and it did just that from the streets of the country. The organizers and the eminent jury, were delighted with the entries received. The photographs were poetry in motion.

Just as they delighted the jury, they inspired me. They tickled my poetic imagination and by the end of the contest, I had decided that I must try to convey my poetic interpretation of at least a selection of photographs; this visual poetry series is the result.

Poetry in Motion – the series

I selected at random, 52 photographs including the seven winning ones and interpreted the thoughts of the photograph’s main protagonists’ in verse. Obviously, there can be many interpretations – this is mine.

The poems themselves are restricted to twelve lines each which I thought enough for the photograph’s protagonist, be it animate or inanimate, to express himself/herself /itself. The poems themselves are a mixture of the poignant, profound, and simple which adds variety and keeps everyone interested till the end. The language is simple, easy on the mind and easy indeed on the ear as I narrate it. The visuals, I believe, will support the viewer’s efforts to understand the author’s interpretations.
