“Disease is a manifestation which indicates that there is something wrong with our body,” said Stan Serrao, CMD of Welocity Genetics. Sometimes this manifestation might be a result of our genetic coding which has been passed on for generations through our DNA, he said.

Welocity Life Sciences Pvt Ltd are the pioneers and market leaders in Nutrigenomics in India. This genetics based wellness company from Mumbai offers a cutting-edge gene related wellness solution to such problems which revolves around a once-in-a-life-time Nutrigenomics DNA test.  This test investigates human body’s response to various nutrients, diet and exercise regimen based on an individual’s DNA. “Under this once-in-a-lifetime predictive DNA testing program, we conduct 210 DNA tests are conducted with a 250-page exhaustive report, which is followed by genetic counselling by Nutrigenomics experts and a personalized gene-based diet plan and lifestyle modifications,” Stan said.

“By looking at the genotype (the genetic constitution of an individual organism), we find the phenotype (expression of traits) of a particular person, which reveals why the body is behaving in such a manner,” he said, “Often times these tests which are conducted can help to predict the possibility of a weakness the body can experience such as common lifestyle conditions such as diabetes, cardiac ailments or obesity.” Stan said that this predictive health care assess the genetic material of the body which helps to avoid a risk in the future. “The genetic material does not change; it is passed on from generation to generation and you may or may not have received a particular character from your parent.” He said that through this non-invasive predictive DNA testing, the root cause of the disease can be found. Genetics has the power to pinpoint and predict exactly the problem, he added.

Established in the year 2016, Welocity Genetics has always tried to spread awareness among the community and people of India regarding the importance of genetic sequencing and its various possibilities. “Over the course of four years, we have conducted sequencing test on over 10,000 people including our brand ambassador Actress Pooja Bedi and various other politicians and celebrities,” said Stan.

As part of their ongoing awareness programme, WIGNET (Welocity Institute of Genomics, Nutrition and Entrepreneurship Training) in association with Welocity Genetics is presenting SAGE (Sustained Accreditation of Genomics Education) and organising the sixth season of National Workshop on the emerging trends in Epi-genetics, on Friday June 4 and Saturday June 5 from 10 am to 1 pm.

“Epi-genetics talks about the external factors and the environment which affects our gene expression and the way our gene behaves,” Stan said. He said that through understanding this, new insights can be found on ways to treat patients for a better scope of healthcare.

The workshop will be moderated by Stan Serrao and experts in this field will be leading the workshop. This six-hour workshop which is divided into two days costs Rs 2500/- but has been ofefred absolutely free of cost for News Karnataka readers. For Zoom login details, you may contact Sanjana on 79777 60642. The topics of the workshop are as follows.

Apart from this programme, WIGNET is also organising a two-month online certificate course on the fundamentals of nutrigenomics and the science of epigenetics. The course which is offered at a price of Rs 7999 will include 50 chapters and 8 LIVE online interactive sessions for 8 weeks, which touches on the various factors related to genome sequencing.

Speaking more on the topic of genetic sequencing, Stan said that this test is different from the Forensic DNA testing using for identifying the DNA and the Clinical DNA testing which is done by doctors. “The wellness test that we conduct not only identifies the problem from the invisible level but also provides the much-needed counselling to tackle this issue,” he said.

At Welocity Genetics, the team believes in the phrase ‘Let food be thy medicine’ by Hypocrites, the father of modern medicine. Depending on the test results of the genetic sequencing, a gene-based diet plan is provided to the patients. “Medicines are not always the cure to problems and sometimes the solution can be a simple lifestyle change or a diet plan which includes everything that the body needs,” Stan said. The patients are counselled on what to eat, everyday changes to be made, exercises to be included, sleep patterns, meditation and the vitamin intakes in their body.

Stan stressed on the importance of a healthy nutritional diet which provides everything that the body requires to grow. “Even though a child may look healthy, he may be lacking a lot vitamins and amino acids which the fast-food chains cannot provide. This creates a weak immune system which attracts a lot of diseases like the Covid pandemic which is surging in the country today,” he said.

Human genetics has come a long way since the first Human Genome study which started in the year 1990. This breakthrough which was an attempt to identify the 20,000 to 25,000 genes which are responsible for certain characteristics in the body, inspired the beginning of Welocity Genetics. Stan acknowledges that there are a lot of ethical questions related to genetical engineering and altering of DNA which is gone across the world. Stan said, “the flip side of genetic sequencing is that there are a lot of genetically modified things in our world right now but genetics has helped us to identify and understand our body in a deeper level!”
