Mangaluru: In case of any unwanted or extra food in any of your functions, please do not waste it. It is our responsibility to make it available to the needy- pleads a youth group of 40 members including students, working and nonworking people of Mangaluru.

The members of this group call themselves ‘team G2C’ in which `G2` stands for the second generation and `C’ stands for creation. Hence, feeding the needy with the food which is getting wasted in functions is the idea of the second generation. Initially, members of this group started to disburse food to the destitute, when they found an excess of food in their own family programmes. Now they plan to help the destitute and poor people through food, which is being wasted in private and public programmes every day.

How did the idea crop up?

Jithesh K, a resident of Thokur is the key person behind this idea. He was working for a marketing company earlier. After experiencing some health issues in his work he left the job and started his profession in event management. As he found a huge amount of food wasted in some programmes, an idea of distributing such food to the poor cropped up in his mind and he shared his opinion with his friends.

When Jithesh received good response from his friends, he formed the group `team G2C’ and also started a WhatsApp group. They have already printed a handbill asking the people not to waste the food, but give it to them, promising that they would disburse it to the needy. Though the handbill has not been officially launched so far, it has been circulating on social media and has gained good response from the public too.

Collected food should not be wasted

Jithesh, when contacted, told newskarnataka.com that he came to contact with a person Joseph Crasta, who has been running a charitable trust called “Snehalaya” in the city. “I am inspired by the noble work of Joseph Crasta who has been serving the poor, sick and destitute. As we found a huge quantity of food getting wasted in programmes every day, we decided to disburse it to the needy. A meeting will be called within a few days to decide on how to work in this regard. Once we start collecting excess food from the people to disburse it to the needy, we should ensure that the collected food is not being wasted,” he says.

If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one. These were the words of Mother Teresa who was famous for humbly ministering to lepers, the homeless and the poorest of the poor. Inspired by the words of Mother Teresa, the members of `team G2C` have taken the initiative of feeding people, with this unique step.
