Meet Jodi Anoorabh; Anoosha and Saurabh, a young couple who are dancers and choreographers. Jodi Anoorabh has over 90K followers on Instagram. They make dance covers for their YouTube channel and contend that dancing has always been their passion for a long time. Anoosha Shetty, 28, from Kundapura, Udupi is a software engineer in an MNC. She came to Bengaluru to pursue engineering till 2014. Saurabh, 32, born and brought up in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh also pursued engineering till 2011. He arrived in Bangalore after the completion of his studies. He works as a software engineer. “We met through a dating app in 2015 and in 2016, we decided to dance together although we knew it was a mutual interest. We wish we had started off earlier!” Jodi Anoorabh expressed.

Dance changed us: Jodi Anoorabh

Speaking on their relationship with dance, the couple contended that dance changed them for better. It has made them grasp the vitality of freedom and confidence. “When you’re dancing, you’re free for that moment. Dance taught how important it is to be free, and to live in the moment. Dance makes us very confident when we perform. It enhances our personality. It makes us free from judgments,” Jodi Anoorabh added. The couple’s favourite dance routine they have choreographed is for the song Nice for what by Drake. It was shot in Kerala.

“It was a vacation, pre-Covid. This was a combination of dance, travel and cinematography. It’s very special for us,” the couple asserted. The couple takes inspiration from Kings United crew, Himanshu Dulani and many other brilliant choreographers.

From dancers to choreographers

In conversation about their journey as dancers, Saurabh informed that it has been more than 10 years since he opened his Youtube channel to post his dance covers. However, dancing and choreographing are two different things, albeit their nature in performance. Every choreographer has their own way of thinking but Jodi Anoorabh believes that musicality plays a major role. “Musicality is a key that we have learnt as dancers, which is a skill required to be good choreographers,” the couple said. “You need to feel the rhythm, feel the music and what it’s trying to say,” Saurabh added.

According to Anoosha, it’s very important that whoever watches their choreography should be able to feel that music. “Since we choreograph for those small beats that often go unnoticed, many of our viewers go back to listen to that music and recognise those beats after watching our video,” Jodi Anoorabh clarified.

How does Jodi Anoorabh work?

Choreographing as Jodi Anoorabh and personal life as a couple aren’t two distinct experiences for the couple. “There is no line over work and personal life as such between us since both of us indulge in the same profession.” Anoosha said. As a couple – Jodi Anoorabh decides to choreograph for a video. In the process, they are on the same ground most of the time. “But sometimes we have differences of opinions. We sort it through healthy discussions. We both rationally think about what would be the best choice. We try to understand each other’s perspective and see who makes more sense. There’s no ego between us. If one of us is able to sell an idea better, then we hold onto it in practical terms,” Jodi Anoorabh affirmed.

Trends v/s authentic dance forms

Jodi Anoorabh started doing Tik Tok dances last year, before the emergence of the pandemic in India. The couple often watched ‘Gen Z’ do small steps and found it amusing. But Tik Tok dance or viral dance videos, although new and distinct from original dance forms, don’t overpower the latter. “Trends are for fun purposes only and lets not try to compared that with authentic dances. For example, Bharathanatyam is an art form that not everyone can perform, but everyone understands how difficult it is to learn because it takes years of practise. So it is difficult to do lengthy choreographies which requires years of practice and we also think it is not easy to get the GEN Z style as well for these short videos which are in trend now,” Jodi Anoorabh said. Both the crafts have their own perks and difficulties that need training.

“We like both, original dance forms that we’ve learned for years and these trendy routines. We do both, a good two minute choreography and trending videos. There shouldn’t be any competition,” Jodi Anoorabh mentioned. Generation gaps play a vital role in determining the duration of some dance forms sticking to the mass of dancers. “The more people dance in a certain form, the more that style will be recognised in a particular time period. Certain dance forms are currently fading away, yes, but its permanency is something we can’t be sure of,” the couple added.

The role of small screen and social media

We observe many young choreographers participating in dance based reality TV shows. Soon, the film industry opens up opportunities for them. Jodi Anoorabh has a different take on this trajectory. Since the mediums of mass communication is constantly evolving; from Radio, Television to mobile phones, reaching the commoners has become relatively simpler. “With phones, social media carries that influential power. One doesn’t need validation of being a good person from the fame of appearing on TV. People are automatically validating since everything is available on social media,” the couple maintained. There are various opportunities. “The generation is changing, not necessarily one can get recognised through TV because now, people consume more of social media than the former. We aren’t trained enough to get into a dance TV show. We believe people should embrace whatever opportunities that come their way and show their talent wherever they can. If you really want to showcase your talent then don’t wait for a TV show,” advised Jodi Anoorabh.

Film song choreographies v/s workshops

Jodi Anoorabh hasn’t done film song choreographies yet. They conduct dance workshops. They focus more on musicality. “If it’s a zumba workshop, we add more energetic steps. If the music is slower, then we go for lyrical and expressive dance,” they revealed.

A film song choreography spins around the entertainment factor, since one has to keep the audience hooked for those 2-3 minutes. “The entertainment factor goes hand in hand for the dance covers we make for our YouTube channel,” Anoosha added.

Future endeavours

The couple isn’t monetising their passion currently. “We don’t have a standard path for becoming artistes like we have for engineers, therefore it’s difficult. We don’t know where we will go from here but yes, if good opportunities come our way, we’ll surely consider them,” Jodi Anoorabh disclosed.

In conversation about their journey so far, the couple added, “There are so many little things that we’re very grateful for. Since we’re married, some of our viewers have also taken up dancing irrespective of their marital status and age. It feels so good to spread happiness.  We believe in living in the moment, and we are currently enjoying what we are doing, with the intention of continuing on and seizing any opportunities that may arise,” the couple signed off.
