Manipal: Toastmaster Bharathi Shevgoor addressed the members of the Manipal Udupi Toastmasters club on the topic of Creative Writing at Forrader, Manipal on the 13th of September 2015. TM Bharathi is an HR professional, newspaper columnist and a veteran member of the Winners Toastmasters Club, Mangalore.
In her Educational session she impressed upon the audience that the writer should cause the reader to have word pictures in his mind. Word pictures are neural pathways and could be in the form of Position, Posture, Colour, Sound, Movement or Shape. She also emphasized on some key criteria in fiction writing – theme/story, characters, the plot, the atmosphere, narration and a narrative viewpoint. Narration could be in the form of showing the reader or telling the reader.
TM Bharathi also urged the audience to read Books, newspapers, blogs, travelogues etc. She also highlighted the importance of reading a variety of literature rather than sticking to a particular genre. After all, ‘the death of imagination would be walking on the same path.’
TM Tanuja, President of the Manipal Udupi Toastmasters welcomed the gathering. TM Chetana, VP Education of the club introduced TM Bharathi. TM Vijayalakshmi delivered the Vote of thanks. The Education Session was attended by members of the Manipal Udupi Toastmasters Club as well as many student guests from Manipal.
