IIMUN-M’lore chapter presented by Yenepoya School held from Dec 18-20

 Mangaluru: Indian International Model United Nations – Mangalore Chapter 2015 presented by The Yenepoya School introduced the concept of IIMUN to the students of Mangalore. It was a unique experience to see students in the age group of 16 – 25 years running a conference like this. The ‘Indian International Model United Nations (IIMUN) has the distinction of being one of India’s leading brand in education conference management, having organized Asia’s Largest Youth Conference in Mumbai with more than 2000 students participating.
IIMUN-M’lore chapter presented by Yenepoya School held from Dec 18-20-1The IIMUN – Mangalore chapter was organised from December 18 to 20, 2015 at The Yenepoya School-Mangaluru. Being a conference for the youth by the youth and of the youth, it is run completely by students. At IIMUN, they organise simulations of local bodies, the Indian Parliament and the United Nations where students don the hats of diplomats and try to solve local, national and global issues.

The events organized by IIMUN have been attended or supported by noted luminaries like Hon. UN Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon, Hon. UN Under Secretary General Peter Launsky, Hon. UN Chief of Education Outreach Nathalie Leroy, Former UN Under Secretary General Shashi Tharoor, Hon. Chief Minister of Maharashtra Pritviraj Chavan, Hon. Union Minister of Agriculture Sharadchandra Govindrao Pawar, Founder of UTV and Walt Disney India Ronnie Screwvala, Noted Bollywood Actors like Imran Khan, Rahul Bose, Vir Das, Cyrus Broacha, Aftab Shivdasani, National Film Award winner, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Subhash Ghai, CEO of Future Group Kishore Biyani, National Information Officer of United Nations Information Centre Rajiv Chandran, Former Union Minister Manish Tewari, Union Cabinet Minister Suresh Prabhu and had performances by Dance Maestro Shaimak Davar, Mudassar Khan apart from the ever green veteran Singer and mascot of the organisation, Leslie Lewis and many more.

The IIMUN – Mangalore Chapter presented by The Yenepoya School was inaugurated on December 18, 2015 by Hon’able Minister for Health & Family Affairs, Government of Karnataka, U T Khader, Managing Director of The Yenepoya School, Farhaad Yenepoya, Director, IIMUN, Ms Loraine Miranda and Director General of IIMUN - Mangalore Shreya Mutha. U T Khader while addressing the audience spoke about the importance of involving youth in such activities to develop leaders of tomorrow. Farhaad Yenepoya congratulated IIMUN for bringing this concept to Mangalore and expressed the hope that more schools in Mangalore would join this next year. Lorraine and Shreya thanked The Yenepoya School for hosting this programme.

December 19 and 20 saw the students don the hats of delegates and compete in the various committees as representatives of different countries. The committees were Security Council, Human Rights Council, International Atomic Energy Agency, Disarmament and Security Council, International Press, Economic and Social Council and Vidhan Sabha. Students had to present their countries views on the Agenda before the committees like Reforms in the Security Council, Aid to Africa, Iran’s Nuclear Policy, Drone Warfare, Women Empowerment and Pollution by MRPL in Mangalore. While engaging in the debates the challenge for the students was to stick to the rules and procedures which included not using their names, raising the motion in case they wanted to interrupt the debate and maintain decorum at all times. And the students did it with elan. Most of them were first timers and got appreciation from the Executive Board members and the organisers for their performance.

Besides the schools and colleges from Mangalore, there were schools from Coimbatore, Satara and Kolhapur who participated in the event. CS Academy from Coimbatore won the Best Delegation Award. Though The Yenepoya School was a first time participant in IIMUN, the students presented a remarkable performance bagging many prizes. For Security Council, Kaif Yenepoya (Syria) was adjudged the Best delegate, High Commendationwas secured by Rahul Kamath and Mohammed Althaf ( Iraq), Mansha Ashraf and Samah ( Japan) got the Special Mention,  In Vidhan Sabha - Best Delegate was  Aman Bhargav, High Commendation- Aishwarya Shetty and  Special Mention went to Zaid Lateef, In Human Rights Council, High Commendation was bagged by Zoranuddin ( Israel), International Press – Best Photographer award went to Rishik Raj.

The ground work for the IIMUN – Mangalore was done by Emmanuel B K, Faculty of The Yenepoya College and the team of Interns from Yenepoya PU Collegeled by Mohammed Irfan. 18 students of the PU College who were the Organising Committee members were given certificates for interning with IIMUN.

IIMUN showcases the determination of the youth in doing what they believe in and developing Global leaders. With India touted to be one of the leading candidates to become the next super power by the pundits, there has never been more need for young leaders. Youth represents the Modern India, young mindsets, young visions and new perceptions.

There is a great burst in the youth to be more effective and involved in social issues. The youth today feels an urge to speak up, to stand by itself and its beliefs and ideals. The Indian International Model United Nations is trying to create platforms to bring the youth forward by providing the youth a responsible medium to put forth their ideas. IIMUN – Mangalore was successful in giving this platform to the students of Mangalore. We at The Yenepoya School thank IIMUN for shifting their focus beyond the schools in the Metropolitan cities and reaching out to the students across the country in smaller towns and cities.
