Dharwad: The twenty-one-year old wrestler Santosh Hosamani of Dharwad taluk who had participated in the recently held State Olympics meet in Dharwad met with a tragic end here on Tuesday.

His death has sent shockwaves among the sports fraternity in the region. The youth who had gained the distinction of “Karnataka University Blue”, had suffered fractures in the thigh bone while he was competing with another wrestler of Davangere during 95 kg free style category at the Karnataka State Olympic sports event recently.

He had undergone a surgery successfully at Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) here on Monday. But, the doctors claimed that fat embolism is the cause of his death. They claimed that he suffered heart attack as fat got into the bloodstream and lodged in a blood vessel. However, several members of his family and friends alleged that the negligence of the doctors after surgery has caused his death.

He belonged to a small village Chikkamalligawad in Dharwad taluk. He had dreamt of winning a medal in national wrestling competition being held at Rohtak Haryana next week after the State Olympics sports event.

His friends claimed that he was shifted to KIMS hospital from a private hospital hoping that the government will bear all medical expenses as he belongs to a poor family. But, no officials or sports authorities have visited the hospital to enquire about his health condition. Due to this, his family members have borne the treatment cost of thousands of rupees by taking loan.

“The officials of Karnataka State Olympics Association have failed to make arrangement for providing proper treatment to him. The doctors have also shown negligence in giving treatment, despite his reputation, that led to his death”, his brother Vinay alleged.

Santosh, Hosamani, who was studying final year B.Com, had been undergoing training at Bala Maruti Wrestling School in Dharwad.

The wrestlers and people of his village held a silent procession carrying his body through the main thoroughfares of the city before taking it to his village. District In-charge Minister Vinay Kulkarni has announced a compensation of Rs 5 Lakh to the family of the deceased wrestler.
