Dharwad: The historic Shri Kariyamma Devi temple at Shantiniketan Nagar here has been witnessing Navaratri celebrations being celebrated with pomp and gaiety since October 1.

The presiding diety ‘Kariyamma’ the Gram devate of Doddanayakana koppa involving many surrounding areas here is the center of attraction. Ever since the new temple has been built, the number of devotees has been increasing owing to the disciplined rituals observed by the committed devotees.

Residents here at Shantiniketan Nagar and surrounding areas observe special prayers, bhajan and decoration to the diety as part of ‘Saptah’, a week long programme as part of Navaratri celebrations.

The devotees go to bed at midnight after finishing all religious programmes at the temple and sleep barely 3-4 hours and get ready for special puja, archanas carried out at the temple in the early morning during utsavas.

History

The history of the temple dates back to the Kadamba period. People moving from Dharwad towards Goa used to take rest beneath a huge Neem tree under which goddess Kariyamma was offered puja in form of a ‘gundu kallu’. It is also said that King Shivaji too visited the temple then which was surrounded by mainly farm lands near Kelageri tank.

Various veteran swamijis who visited the temple were spellbound and lauded the history and the power of the diety.

New teachers colony was carved out in the area some 15 years back and the residents there dreamt of building a big temple replacing the smaller one. But no one dared to cut the Neem tree wherein puja was offered. Within some days, the tree itself fell down paving way for construction of the new temple building, it is said.

Special puja, archanas are offered during the Jatra Mahotsav and Navaratri here. Kariyamma is decorated as Shri Shankari, Padmavati, Tulajabhavani, Mahagouri, Renukadevi, Gayatridevi, Mahalakshmi, Shakhambari, Annapoorneshwari, Mahasaraswati and lastly as Mahishashur mardini on the last of Navaratri utsav and special puja is offered.

The plainquain (Pallakki) is taken out in the evening in the area, banni puja is performed and the devotees offer prayers to the goddess who pass through their house in the vicinity.

People young and old alike celebrate the occasion dancing to the tune of music and drumbeats.

Curtains are brought down to the festivity with the Mahamangalarati offered during the night on Vijaydashami. The temple trust committee has been active and supportive and offering services to devotees through mass marriages and other welfare programmes.
