Dharwad: The High Court on Friday dismissed the petition filed by BJP questioning the right of MLAs, MPs and MLCs to vote in the BBMP mayoral polls.
The Dharwad bench of the High Court Justice Raghavendra Chavan set aside the plea by BJP which had contended that only corporators should have voting rights.
In the recently held mayoral polls, Congress and JD(S) forged an alliance and formed the Council in Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
In the crucial BBMP elections, even though BJP won 100 seats, Congress which had 75 seats forged an alliance with JD(S) with the support of independent candidates thereby restricting BJP from coming to power once again.
If the HC had struck down the provision under which elected representatives are allowed to vote, the mayoral polls would have had to be held again.
