Dharwad: The Sustainable Development Forum (SDF) has warned the elected representatives and the district authorities of launching an agitation against the road expansion project from Narendra Cross to Jubilee Circle in Dharwad, if trees located on both sides of the road were felled.
SDF President P V Hiremath, members Dr. Sanjiv Kulkarni, Prakash Bhat, Prakash Goudar and others told reporters that both the state and the Centre had embarked upon laying four-lane road to ease traffic congestion.
However, the greens have been demanding not to cut-down the age-old trees on either side of this road. There are as many as 490 huge valuable trees. For the execution of the road widening project, felling of these trees is not a necessity, he said.
Hiremath said the elected representatives had assured the greens of protecting these trees and a meeting too would be called to discuss on measures to be taken so that it is a win-win situation for either sides.
If the government turns a deaf ear to this appeal, the environmentalists with the support of general public, will be forced to launch agitation against the road expansion project, he warned.
