Dharwad: District authorities here have decided to root out the menace of illegal hoardings and plastic bags in twin cities.
A decision in this regard was taken at a progress review meeting of the urban local bodies.
Chairing the meeting, District In-charge Minister Vinay Kulkarni said Hubballi-Dharwad were the fastest growing cities after Bengaluru and hence emphasis should be given to provide basic facilities for the inclusive growth here.
Banners and flexes are being installed at the important circles and all-along the main roads in both the cities, which are spoiling the beauty here and also creating traffic hazards, he opined.
When he sought the support of elected representatives to curb the banner menace, Leader of the Opposition in Assembly Jagadish Shettar, MLC Basavaraj Horatti and all the corporators unanimously gave their consent to the decision.
Hence, it was decided to file criminal case against those erecting banners illegally at the important circles. Only those advertisement boards which take permission from the HDMC and follow the guidelines would be allowed to be displayed, he said.
The meeting was informed about use of plastic bags and sale of banned gutkha in twin cities.
Regarding the cleanliness issue, the minister asked officials to strictly monitor fogging and cleanliness work to protect the health of the people.
Mayor D K Chavan, Deputy Commisioner S B Bommanahalli and others were present.
