Davanagere: A complaint has been lodged against PDO and other officials by the animal activists for the alleged mass killing of over 150 dogs here in Belagutti Gram Panchayat limits in Honnali taluk.

A complaint has been registered against gram panchayat PDO, president, vice-president and officials at Nyamati Police Station on the allegation of killing and burying over 150 dogs.

The complaint was registered as per Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960 of Animal Welfare Board of India. Animal Welfare Board official Harish and team visited Belaguthi village and have collected decomposed bodies of the dogs and have sent for post-mortem.

As per Supreme Court, while killing a stray brings a fine of Rs 50, an individual could face up to five years in jail for a similar crime against a pet. The gram panchayat has violated the law and has been facing backlash from animal lovers.
