WGSHA, Manipal University, CHTR & DAHS jointly observe Matribhasha Diwas

Udupi: UNESCO has declared 21st February every year as International Mother Language Day to promote the dissemination of mother tongues and create fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world so as to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.

As per directives of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India, Centre for Hospitality &Tourism and Department of Allied Hospitality Studies, WGSHA, Manipal University, celebrated Matribhasha Diwas on 21st February, 2017 at Hirebettu primary Kannada Medium School, Athrady, Udupi District, to sensitize people about the need of greater use of Mother Tongue and other Indian Languages for development and progress of the nation, impart communication skills and proficiency in Mother Tongue and other Indian Languages amongst English-medium students to encourage people to learn one more Indian language

On this occasion, various programmes were arranged. Chief Guest Shri Varadaraj Hegde, Ex MD , Farmers Cooperative Society, Hiriyadka expressed his views regarding usage of Matribhasha so that the linguistic diversity of our country is preserved. He also emphasized motivating learning languages that are not one’s own Matribhasha. Faculty members and students have given speeches to the school children.

CHTR organized various competitions like Essay writing, Elocution, Poetry writing and Collage making among the students of Hirebettu School in their mother tongues. 80 students from the school and 15 students from DAHS, WGSHA have participated in the event conducted.

A year-long activities/ programmes have been launched/ initiated to implement the objectives of Matribhasha Diwas . Students will be undertaking these programme as part of their Professional Development and Event Management program and community extension activities.
Head of DAHS, Manipal University coordinated the program while School Headmistress proposed vote of thanks.
