New Delhi: On Sunday 19th January 2020 Kanara Cultural Association (KCA) New Delhi (Regd) organized an impressive family get- together at South Delhi’ s Sahoday School Auditorium. More than 200 families from Gurugram, Faridabad, Noida, Vaishali and from different parts of Delhi came together to celebrate the Christmas festive season and New Year 2020. Mr. Alwyn Norohna, Executive Vice President (Projects) ITC, shared his experience of growing up in a family and how it shapes once life by binding to the community. He emphasized the importance of rooting oneself in the community and culture. He pointed out it was easy for the first and second generation but difficult for the third generation who are born and brought up in different cities. They need regular exposure to the community and functions like the one organized by KCA helps to build a bond and bridge the gap with the community and strengthen KCA in Delhi.
The function began in the morning at 9.30 with a concelebrated Konkani mass by KCA’s spiritual director Fr. Rohan and Fr.Victor D’Souza, former Vicar General of Delhi Diocese and KCA’s first spiritual director. KCA Vice President Ms. Priya welcomed all. The choir was led by Mr. Arun and his team with Jessica Mathias on the keyboard.
KCA President, Mr. Pius Monteiro, while welcoming all to the formal function, explained why this year’s KCA’s Christmas celebration is special in many ways. The most important reason was the visit to the house of senior members of KCA of the National Capital Region during the Christmas season. The new KCA initiative and visit generated goodwill and happiness in large measure among KCA members. The visits also helped KCA to reach the lonely and aged. Chief Guest, Mr. Vasanth Shetty Bellare, Chairman, Delhi Kannada Education Society and former President of Delhi Kannada Sangha was generous in his praise for the service the Konkani speaking Catholic community does in education and other areas in Delhi. He also emphasized the importance of language and the advantage of knowing Konkani, Tulu, and Kannada.
Gifts to children by Santa, tombola, and games kept everyone busy and occupied. Active participation by more than 40 children and youth in competitions during the program made everyone happy. Youth secretary Mr. Loyal did a wonderful job as MC and provided nonstop entertainment in Konkani to the audience. Cultural Secretary Mr. Melvin, the brain behind the cultural activities, surprised everyone by his many talents.
Former KCA Presidents and Executive Committee Members, and Area and Zonal Representatives were present in full strength. Mr. Lancy Paul Furtado, former KCA treasurer was honored with a shawl, as he plans to leave Delhi after retirement. KCA President, Mr. Pius Monteiro honored all the sponsors/donors of the function by inviting them individually on the stage with a shawl and requested the support of all to all KCA future programs.
The function concluded with the singing of “Laudate”. Delicious lunch, prepared by KCA volunteers under the leadership of Mr. Robert D’Souza made everyone present extremely happy.
