CASK distributes scholarship worth Rs 15 lakh to deserving students

Mangaluru: The Catholic Association of South Kanara (CASK) distributed various scholarships to deserving students in a programme held at the Bishop’s House Hall on Saturday July 24, 2021. The scholarships were handed over by the Bishop of Mangaluru-Dr Peter Paul Saldanha. There were three categories of Scholarships :

  1. Endowment Scholarships worth Rs 1,40,000 to 6 beneficiaries – Ladislaus B.Aranha Endowment-3 students and one scholarship each under the Judith Brown nee Colaco Fund, Bertie & Juliet Pinto Fund and the Marigold Fund.
  2. Covid Support Scholarships worth Rs 7 Lakhs to 32 students whose families were bereaved due to covid deaths or negatively affected by hospitalization for covid infection from Mangalore, Udupi and Chikmagalur dioceses;
  3. Annual Scholarships worth Rs 6,60,000 to 64 students from over 40 institutions. This included 8 scholarships under the Franklin Mathias Endowment Fund;

The Scholarships were sanctioned without any consideration to religion, language, marks or merit. The only consideration was – whether the student belonged to a marginalized or distressed family.

In his address, Dr Peter Paul Saldanha said, “CASK has been doing good work in helping the needy students and families, specially during this covid pandemic times. The journey should not stop here as the beneficiaries should in turn invest on education or well-being of other deserving needy and give back to society. Try to help at least one person. Pass on and help the chain to continue.”

Capt Arul Aranha, son of Late Ladislaus B Aranha in whose name the family has established an Endowment Fund worth Rs.10 lakhs expressed his appreciation to CASK. Dr Derek Lobo,  coordinator of CASK Covid support project gave a briefing on the various CASK Scholarships.    Ullhas Rasquinha, Coordinator of the CASK Annual Scholarships ably handled the Scholarship distribution to a total of 102 students. Immediate past president of CASK Nayana Fernandes read out the beneficiary names.

President of CASK-Capt Vincent Pais welcomed the gathering and Secretary-Anand Pereira proposed the vote of thanks. Vice-president of CASK-Patsy Lobo ably compered the programme.
