Emotion is often defined as a complex state of feeling that results in physical and psychological changes that influence thought and behavior.

Emotions have a significant role in making us human. We are all emotional beings. While it is true that a few people overtly express their emotions; a few people covertly experience it. There is another set of people who are not in touch with their emotions.

Some people also confuse the word emotion with vulnerability. They say “I’m an emotional person” because they get overwhelmed very easily.

But emotions are of different kinds. We experience various types of emotions like happy, sad, disgusted, angry, fearful, bad, surprised, and so on. These broader emotions are further classified into many more emotions. Therefore, a person who is going through any of these emotions is an emotional individual irrespective of whether it is visible to others or not.

When it comes to the question of controlling emotions, one of the primary understandings that we need to have is “whether controlling the emotion refers to suppressing the emotions or finding healthier ways of expressing the emotions which are not overburdening oneself or the other?”.

When we say we control the emotions it’s not about disowning the emotions but regulating the modes of expression of emotions. For example, if a person is angry about something, then s/he may not express that anger violently. Instead, one may anger could be conveyed in an assertive way where the other person understands the causal factor for anger. Then there would be reciprocity and receptivity for the emotions at a much higher level.

Hence, one should not suppress the emotions but experience them completely and express them in healthier ways.
