Gundlupet: A young cop attached to Begur Police Station committed suicide on Monday , March 7 giving rise to many questions over his death.
Prasad (31), original resident of Kabballi is the deceased.
On the fateful day, When Prasad did not respond to several telephone calls, police staff rushed to his staff quarters, only to find his body hanging from a ceiling fan tied with a bedspread.
Prasad had joined the police service in 2008 and was moved to Begur station three months ago. He is survived by wife and a daughter.
Doubts surface over his death
Prasad was last seen by his colleague’s wife moving around with tears in his eyes on Sunday, March 5. She had accordingly informed her husband about it and earlier to that some other people had seen him talking over the phone.
Enraged by his death, Kabballi villagers rushed to Begur police station led by ZP member K S Mahesh, suspecting pressure from higher-ups as the prime reason for his death. They vented their ire over SP Kuldip Kumar’s delayed arrival at the spot by blocking traffic for over 30 minutes.
Circle Inspector K V Krishnappa and his staff succeeded in pacifying the agitated villagers, when they resorted to protest in front of the police station. Only after SP Kuldeep Kumar assured of a compensation of Rs 20 Lakh with all other benefits including a job to his kin did the villagers allow the body to be sent for post mortem.
Prasad’s role in booking and seizing an auto over ferrying cattle calves in one case and raiding a gambling den had angered the accused. Several threatening calls by men close to the accused had negative impact on Prasad, according to friends and relatives close to him.
