Poisoned Prasadam: Death toll rises to 16

Chamarajanagar: The death toll in the temple prasadam poisoning case has shot up to 16 with the death of Nagesh (45), who was being treated in the hospital, on Friday.

As many as 15 had died after consuming prasadam laced with poison at Kichuguthu Maramma Temple of Sulvadi village. Nagesh, a resident of Martalli was being treated in JSS Hospital, Mysore. As the news of his death spread, the inconsolable relatives flocked the hospital.

Another 100 people are being treated in 11 hospitals in Mysore, out which 36 are in the ICU and 21 are under life support systems.

The forensic labs in their report to the police have said that the insecticide, monocrotophos was used in poisoning the rice prasadam, which is an organophosphate. The doctors treating the victims have opined that the organophosphate impairs the transmission of signals between nerves and muscles making it hard to breathe.
