Poachers kill elephant, decamp with tusks

Chamarajanagar: An incident of poachers killing an elephant with a country rifle and smuggling its tusks has come to light nearly 15 days after its occurrence, here on Saturday, February 9.

The forest officials found this body on Sunday, February 3, in Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary located in Kothanur forest area.

The tusker was found in a decomposed state in the Chikkalur jurisdiction.

It is now known from the forest officials that the poachers had entered the forest area during the Chikkalur fair and had shot the 50-year-old tusker right on its head. They had used acid to separate its tusks from the body.

The incident came to light when one of the forest officials was on rounds.

He immediately informed the higher officials after which Zonal Forest Officer Rajashekharappa rushed to the spot and assessed the situation.

It is suspected to that the poaching has taken place a fortnight ago.

ACF (Assistant Conservator of Forest) Ankaraju has informed that a team under the guidance of higher officials has been formed to investigate the matter and a complaint has been registered.
