Hundreds of acres of wildlife sanctuary charred in M M Hills fire

Hanur: When the dreadful Bandipur wildfire is still fresh in the minds of the people, yet another incident has occurred in Male Mahadeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, here on Thursday, March 28.

The forest has been engulfed in a raging fire from past two days and hundreds of acres of reserve charred.

The sanctuary caught fire on March 26 evening. According to the forest officials this was not a natural disaster but a man made one.

The forest reserve on the Male Mahadeshwara hills is semi evergreen and huge amount of bamboo is burnt down.

The situation has been worsening due to the sparks from the bursting bamboo shoots spreading metres across the sanctuary. The forest officials have rushed to the spot and trying their level best to get the raging flames under control.

The wind too is posing a challenge to the relief operations.

Hundreds of people from nearby villages are helping the officials deployed from Kaveri and Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary to contain the fire.

The Fire Brigade, Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary Deputy Forest Conservator Yedukondala and Kaveri Wildlife Sanctuary Deputy Forest Conservator Ramesh have been constantly assessing the situation at the spot.

According to the forest officials the forest area was set on fire for no reason.
