World Elders’ Day, World Mental Health Day observed at Yenepoya

Mangaluru: The World Elders Day Programme on the theme “Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions”, and World Mental Health Day on the theme “Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World “, was observed at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) on October 15.

Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi, Chancellor, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) presided over the programme.

Dr CV Raghuveer, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), Dr MS Moosabba, Principal, Yenepoya Medical College, Dr S. Padmanabha, Additional Medical Superintendent, Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Dr Prabha Adhikari, Professor and Head, Department of General Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College and Dr Shelley BP, Professor and Head, Department of Neurology, Yenepoya Medical College Hospital were the dignitaries.

NV Konappa and Asma Kousar, Civil Judges of Dakshina Kannada district and Udayanand, Senior Advocate, represented the legal department at the programme. Vinutha K, Associate Professor represented SDM Law College, Mangalore.

Sr. Irene D’Souza, Mother Superior, Olavinahalli Rehabilitation Centre and Home for the Aged led a team of around 50 elderly inmates, who participated actively in the programme.

Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi and other dignitaries launched the newer initiatives of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), like the Integrated Memory Clinic of the Departments of Neurology, Geriatrics and Psychiatry, Active Aging Programme of Yoga and Physiotherapy and the Community Nursing Survey Programme.

Five distinguished persons, namely, Mr. Ramesh Rao, Secretary, Mangalore Senior Citizens Association, Sister Lilly Serrao from Olavinahalli Rehabilitation Centre and Home for the Aged, Dr. MS Moosabba, Principal, Yenepoya Medical College, Dr Prabha Adhikari, Professor and Head, Department of General Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College and Dr. Nazir Attar, Professor, Department of General Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College, were honoured by the institution for delivering yeoman service to the elderly.

Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi congratulated the Principal and Departments of General Medicine, Community Medicine, Physiotherapy, Nursing and Psychiatry, Yenepoya Medical College for being instrumental in the state award given to Yenepoya Medical College by the Honorable Chief Minister of Karnataka on the occasion of World Elders Day, 2018. He appreciated Dr Prabha Adhikari for setting up and running the Centre for Geriatric Care with the collaborating departments.

Following this, Udayanand and Ramesh Rao delivered their lectures.

The programme was conducted under the leadership of Dr Prabha Adhikari, who also provided an overview of the geriatric health care services delivered by Yenepoya Medical College and welcomed the gathering.

Dr Pracheth R, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine and Dr Prakrithi J, Assistant Professor, Department of, General Medicine, Yenepoya Medical College compered the programme. Dr Santosh K, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine delivered the vote of thanks.
