Mangaluru: An election awareness programme was held by Dakshina Kannada Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation Committee (SVEEP) at the Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management.
The programme was organised to create awareness among the students about the importance of voting in a democracy and to increase the participation of young voters in the upcoming elections in the state.
IAS officer and Chairman of SVEEP Dr. M R Ravi explained the essence of conducting elections and the importance of voting. He also shared his experience gained while working as an election observer and superintendent in his 24-year long career.
Creating awareness among public, ensuring polling booths are accessible to public and protecting the rights of every voter are among the objectives of SVEEP programmes, Dr. Ravi added.
Speaking about Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) and new option of None of the Above (NOTA), Dr. Ravi said that now people had the option to show displeasure about candidates contesting in elections. Instead of sitting at home, he said, people should vote on NOTA if they are unhappy with the candidates.
He also requested the college to establish Electoral Literacy Club and nominate students as Campus Ambassadors to spread awareness about the importance of participating in fair elections.
District Adult Education Officer and SVEEP Nodal Officer Sudhakar administered voter’s pledge to the students and staff. He urged the students to take part in the democratic process by casting their vote and help build a stronger nation.
The Principal of Karnataka Polytechnic College Babu Devadiga also spoke on this occasion.
In his presidential address, Principal of Sahyadri College Dr. Umesh M Bhushi requested the students to actively participate in elections, and thereby, contribute to strengthening democracy and building good governance in the nation.
