Mangaluru: The department of post graduate studies in journalism and mass communication of St. Aloysius College in collaboration with ARIVU, an early intervention center for special children and learning disability, organized an interactive session called “Selfie Addiction Awareness” to promote awareness on the ill-effects of selfie addiction, at Canara College on March 21.
Poornima Bhat, Founder Director of ARIVU, talked on technology based addictions, their symptoms and treatment. She said, “We have a tendency to mock others who post frequently on social media. But we also keep engaging in similar online behaviour by updating our own status on social networking sites. We are unaware when these behaviours turn into addictions…. Our brain is underutilized when we excessively use technology. The effects of selfie are correlated with problems in self esteem and self confidence.”
Symptoms and solutions for “Selfitis”, a clinical mental illness, were also discussed.
Vikranth Shetty and Anvitha Naini, St Aloysius College MCJ students presented the program. Seema Prabhu and Raksha Acharya, lecturers of Canara College Mangaluru, Radhakrishna Bhat, Treasurer of ARIVU, Sapna Shetty, Special Educator ARIVU and students of Canara College participated in the event.
