Mangaluru: St. Agnes College in Mangaluru, is a premiere Catholic educational institution founded on 2 July 1921 by a great visionary Mother Mary Aloysia, the second superior general of the Apostolic Carmel Congregation, who was the first recipient of the Kaiser-i-Hind Gold Medal of the First Class in 1929, a prestigious National Award by the then British Government of India, for her contribution in the field of Women’s Education. St. Agnes College was the first women’s college on the West Coast of India and the second under private management, in the whole country. St. Agnes College stands tall as a beacon of light in the coastal town of Mangaluru and has spread the light of knowledge and wisdom the world over, through the mission of higher education over the last 98 years.

Among its many laurels, the college has recently received the coveted “College of Excellence” (CE) certification from the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. It is the first college under the Mangalore University, the third in the state of Karnataka and the eighteenth in the country to receive this much-sought-after status. St. Agnes College is the first college to go for reassessment and reaccreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for the fourth time (Cycle 4) and was awarded an A+ grade with 3.65/4 CGPA. The college has also recently received the “Star College Status” from the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.

The year 2020-21 is a milestone in the history of St. Agnes College, as it completes 100 years of its existence. It is a significant event for the college to commemorate the 100 years of service in the field of higher education. The centennial celebrations will be officially launched on January 12 at 3.30 PM at the main entrance of the St. Agnes College. The centenary logo will be unveiled and the Agnesian alumnae website will be launched during the programme. There will be a flash mob by the present students, faculty and Agnesian alumnae (including senior citizens). The college also plans to have the same flash mob at the City Centre and Forum Fiza malls on Sunday, January 14.

As a run up to the great celebrations, the college will also be having many networking activities, including a play, a musical concert and a gala fete in Mangalore and similar activities at their various chapters. Besides, various programmes will be organised for all the stakeholders of the college-the students, faculty, support staff, parents and the alumni.

To mark the centenary of the college, a Centenary Memorial Block will be constructed. To accomplish this dream, the college requests the collaboration and cooperation of the alumni, staff, parents, friends, benefactors and well wishers.

For the past one year, the Agnesian alumni have been planning and working together as a team to make the centenary celebration a memorable one. The Agnesians are spread far and wide and the college’s first task is to connect all the Agnesians all over the globe. There are 10 chapters established across the globe, where Agnesians meet and connect with each other.

The Agnesian alumni have also volunteered to shoulder the responsibility of a project of the special school-Veronica Vihar–a residential home for the differently-abled children/adults. The college administration hopes that it would receive the help and support of philanthropists in this noble mission.
