Seminar on ‘Child Rights in India’ in St. Aloysius College from Sep 25

Mangaluru: The MSW department of St. Aloysius College in association with Karnataka Association of Professional Social Workers (KAPSW) will be organising a two-day national seminar titled “ensuring child rights in India: A challenge” at Eric Mathias Hall, Maffei Centre on September 25 and 26.

A press release from St. Aloysius College Principal Rev. Dr. Praveen Martis informed that the chief guest for the inaugural programme would be Dr. Kripa Amar Alva, former chairperson, Karnataka State Commission of Child Rights (KSCPCR), Bengaluru and the chief guest for the valedictory programme J R Lobo, former MLA of Mangaluru South Constituency. The keynote address will be delivered by Prof. Hilda Rayappan, Founder and Director of Prajna Counselling Centre.

The various sub-sessions will be dealt by eminent resource persons like Umashankar Periodi, State Head, Karnataka, Azim Premji Foundation, Bengaluru, Mathew Thelliyil, Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, Kannur, Kerala, N V Vasudeva Sharma, Executive Director, Child Rights Trust, Bengaluru, Sandra Lobo, Associate Professor and HoD, Department of Psychology, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Renni D’Souza, Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, D K District, Poornima Venkat, Assistant Professor, School of Public Health, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, deemed to be university and Nikesh Shetty, former Child Welfare Committee Chairperson (D K District).

The sub-themes of the seminar are, “Child rights in our education system: An overview, emerging issues in India’s Juvenile Justice System, prevalence of child abuse today: different perspectives and people’s role in protecting child rights.” The seminar will provide a platform for all the participants and delegates to discuss, deliberate and critically analyse how the child rights initiatives in India have been able to meet the needs of the children of all sections of society? What are the impediments to the effective implementation of laws? and what proactive measures have to be taken to meet them in order to achieve equal opportunities for development of children, the press release said.
