NSS volunteers of Sharada Degree College leave a lasting impression with their work

Mangaluru: The NSS unit volunteers of the Sharada Degree College, Talapady took part in a seven day NSS Annual Camp at the Shri Bharathi Higher Primary School, Mudipu. This camp provided the volunteers with an insight into the daily hardships of common people and to identify with them.

Out of the many service-related works were undertaken, there were four notable contributions and activities that NSS volunteers which have left an indelible impression on the school.

  • First, the creation of- “Akshara Kai Thotta”, a vegetable and fruit garden that creates a sense of protection and nurturing the ecology.
  • Second, classroom and wall painting, which brought out an informative and social messages through drawings. Along with that one of the Kindergarten, classrooms wall saw the English alphabet painted in such a way that each letter and its representation were remembered in the easiest way. 
  • Third, a group of lady students addressed girls of the school about self-protection and also how to maintain the hygiene of the body especially during the menstruation cycle.
  • And Fourth is the creation of a high-jump pit so that school children can utilize it for their sports activity.

The valedictory programme was presided over by Prof M B Puranik, the president of Sharada Educational Institutions. In his address, he said, “Service should not be confined only to camps but it should turn out to be a walk of life. Service can help in building a peaceful and harmonious society with the support of local people.”

Mr Mahesh Chowta, President of Kairangala Agricultural Co-operative Society was the guest of honor. He noted, “NSS camps should be conducted in one of the most remote areas so that all of us understand how the poorest of the poor lead their daily life. This can be a transformative approach.”

Mr Naveen Kumar Padalpady, Member of Taluk Panchayat, Bantwal was also one of the guests. Dr. Kabinale Balakrishna Bharadwaj, Principal of Sharada Degree College expressed his gratitude to all those who were responsible for the smooth conduct of the camp. Ms Kushi Kundar compered the programme, Ms Preksha welcomed the gathering, Mr Suraj M Devadiga and Mrs Amitha Alva, NSS officers of Sharada Degree College and Staff members graced the programme by their presence.
