NITK Surathkal organises the SIH Internal Hackathon 2020

Surathkal: NITK Surathkal organised the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) Internal Hackathon 2020, a precursor event to Smart India Hackathon 2020, on-campus during January 21-22, 2020. Smart India Hackathon (SIH) is a
a nationwide initiative to provide students with a platform to solve some of the pressing problems we face in our daily lives, and thus inculcate a culture of product innovation and a mindset of problem-solving.

The last edition, SIH 2019, has seen participation from over 5 lakh students from various colleges compete for the top prize, at 65+ locations. In SIH 2020, the students will have the opportunity to work on challenges faced within various Ministries, Departments, Industries, PSUs and NGOs to create world-class solutions for some top organizations, At NITK, a total of 27 student teams of 6 students each registered to participate in the Internal Hackathon.

Of these, 24 teams successfully completed the preliminary formalities and were provided with problem statements to work on. The Hackathon period was from 1:00 PM on 21st January 2020 to 1:00 PM on 22nd January 2020. Students of the Hardware segment worked on SIH 2020 approved problem statement provided by Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Software segment problem statement was chosen from the several problem statements provided by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

The solutions developed by the Student teams were evaluated by experts from Industry and Academia. The External experts who were part of the Jury panel were Kishan A S, (Project Manager, Infosys Ltd), Vikram Shenoy (Senior Project Manager, Infosys Ltd), and Krishnananda Karadka (Managing Director and Founder, Penzigo Technology Solutions Pvt. Ltd).

The Internal Jury members were Dr Shashidhar Koolagudi, (Associate Professor, Dept. of CSE, NITK), Dr Geetha V (Assistant Professor, Dept of IT, NITK) and Dr Senthil Thilak (Assistant Professor, Dept of MACS, NITK).

The best-performing top-7 teams from NITK were announced and will represent NITK Surathkal at the Smart India Hackathon 2020 Software/Hardware Grand Finale Event, during April 4-5, 2020.

The event was presided over by Prof. Ananthanarayana V S, Deputy Director, NITK Surathkal, who spoke about the role of MHRD initiatives like Smart India Hackathon in transforming students from Job seekers to Job creators, by inspiring the entrepreneurial spirit while designing innovative solutions to prevalent problems.

The NITK Internal Hackathon was organised under the guidance of Prof. K V Gangadharan (President of NITK Innovation Council and Head of Center of System Design, a Center of Excellence at NITK).

The organising team included – Dr Vishwanath K P (Asst. Prof, Dept of MACS and SIH 2020 SPOC), Dr Sowmya Kamath S (Convener of NITK Innovation Council and Asst. Prof, Dept of Information Technology) and Dr Suprabha K R (Asst. Prof. School of Management, NITK Surathkal).

Student volunteers from NITK Innovation Cell and Web Enthusiasts’ Club, NITK and the NITK Student Council helped extensively in the successful organization of the event.
