National Science Day-2020 held at Yenepoya (Deemed to be University)

Mangaluru: Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), Deralakatte, Mangaluru organized the “National Science Day-2020” program at Deralakatte campus with this year’s national theme of “Women in Science”. National Science Day is celebrated every year on 28th February to mark the discovery of The Raman Effect by Sir C. V. Raman on 28th February 1928. The chief guest for the occasion, Dr. Thyagaraju B. M., Deputy Adviser, Science and Technology, NITI Aayog, Government of India, discussed the current statistics of women in science in India, the problems faced by them to continue research and the national schemes undertaken to improve the situation. Additionally, he revealed the recent plans under NITI Aayog and the details of national funding agencies for the overall promotion of science and technology in India.

To celebrate National Science Day, a number of events namely, SciQuiz, SciFight (debate), Eureka (pitch an idea), and Insignia (E-emblem) competitions were conducted over the week from 24th-27th Feb 2020. The winners and finalists were felicitated by the Pro-Vice-Chancellors Dr. C.V. Raghuveer and Dr. B.H. Sripathi Rao. The Department of Community Medicine was awarded as the most performing department based on the number of scientific publications and research projects, Eishita Health tech Pvt. Ltd., a start-up by Dr. Sandeep Shetty in the Yenepoya Technology Incubator was awarded as the best start-up by the faculty. Dr. Veena Vaswani was honored for her contribution in establishing the Centre for ethics and promoting “Ethics in Research”. Dr. Vinitha R. Pai was honored for her contribution to the “Ph.D. program” of the University which has produced many researchers. Clinicians, scientists, faculty, research scholars and students from different departments of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) participated in this event.

Dr. C. V. Raghuveer, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), presided over the function. Dr. B.H Sripathi Rao, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Dr. K. Gangadhar Somayaji, Registrar, Dr. Akhter Husain, Dean, Dental College and Dr. Rekha P. D., Deputy Director of Yenepoya Research Centre were present in the event.
