MAHE celebrates International Day of Yoga

Manipal: Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal celebrated International Day of Yoga on Friday, June 21. The event was organized by the Division of Yoga, Centre for Integrative Medicine and Research (CIMR). Students, staff and faculty took part in the programme held at Marena Indoor Sports Complex.

The programme started with yoga demonstration as per the UGC protocol. The session headed by Dr. Annapoorna K, Head of Department, Division of Yoga, started with the articulation of yoga prayer and demonstration of various yogic postures including ‘Swastikasana’, ‘Vajrasana’, Suptavajrasana’, ‘Parivrtatadasana’, Trikonasana’, ‘Veerabadhrasana’, ‘Paschimasana’, ‘Purvasana’, ‘Janushirshasana’, ‘Pavanamuktasana’, ‘Bhujangasana’, ‘Shalabhasana’, ‘Dhanurasana’, ‘Padottanasana and ‘Vakrasana’. Pranayamas including ‘Anulomaviloma’, ‘Suryabedhana’, ‘Bhramari’ and relaxation techniques ‘Makarasana’ and ‘Shavasana’ were also demonstrated.

Dr. Narayana Sabhahit, Registrar, MAHE, Manipal who was the chief guest addressed the gathering and spoke on the importance of yoga and how it can improve the quality of life and how it works as a preventive for various life style disorders and also a means to delay aging.

Dr. N Udupa, Director Research (Health Sciences), MAHE, Manipal welcomed the gathering and Nitu Sinha, Lecturer Division of Yoga gave the vote of thanks. The MSc in Yoga Therapy students put up a good demonstration of yoga postures to conclude the event.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of ‘Asana’ competition, and poster and essay competitions, by C G Muthana, Chief Operating Officer, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal and Dr Padmaraj Hegde, Deputy Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal.
