Inter-college workshop on Polymerase Chain Reaction held at University College

Mangaluru: The department of Microbiology of the University College Mangalore organized a seminar and Hands-on workshop on Polymerase Chain Reaction- PCR, at the Ravindra Kalabhavana here on Saturday.

In his inaugural address, Principal Dr. Uday Kumar M A said that science develops a questioning attitude, logical thinking and solves the problems of day-to-day life. “In recent years, women making their presence felt in many fields including science. Their creative, enthusiastic participation is needed and any transformations in life should not become a barrier for this,” he added.

Nitte University NUCSER Associate Professor Dr. Praveen Rai spoke on PCR techniques, which is used to amplify a precise fragment of DNA from a complex mixture of starting material called as template DNA and its applications. Shantha Kumar and Gopinath of Himedia Labs Pvt. Limited, who provided PCR instruments to the college laboratory, demonstrated the work. More than 45 students from different colleges participated.

Rare PCR lab would attract students, researchers and would help to organize joint-projects. It would help in publishing research articles an added benefit for the college. Microbiology Department Head Dr. Bharathi Prakash, professor Sumangala C H, Dr. Siddaraju M N of Botany were present among others.
