Mangaluru: “College is not only about academics. Sports is also an important part of college life,” said National sub-junior power lifter Venizeia Annie Carlo, inaugurating the Father Muller School and College of Nursing’s annual athletic meet ‘Ignite 2K19- Burst into Flame’. The sports meet was inaugurated today, January 12, at the Father Muller Stadium at 8.30 AM.
Addressing the gathering, Venezeia Carlo, who was the chief guest, thanked the organisers for arranging the event and urged the students not to stop participating in sports activities after graduating from college and to keep indulging in sports on a daily or weekly basis. “You should not be stuck to your desks or your books day in and day out. You should feel the fresh air as you kick a football and savour the saltiness of your sweat as you make the three-pointer shot in basketball,” she said. “Students are more involved with their phones these days. While technology is important in this day and age, you should also take up other activities so that you can have worthwhile stories to share with future generations,” she said and declared the sports meet open.
Director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions, Fr. Richard Coelho, in his presidential address, praised the students for their performance and for the way in which they conducted themselves. He also spoke about how exercise was the best way for one to relieve stress. “This helps us develop a sound mind and sound body,” he said. He added that, while it is good to be competitive, it is equally important to be fair and considerate.
Earlier, the students of Father Muller School and College of Nursing, marched around the ground displaying vibrant coloured uniforms. A torch was taken around the ground by some of the students and presented to the chief guest.
The oath was administered by fourth-year BSc (N) student, Vinita D’Souza.
Later, the institution’s band, led by bandmaster Vijay Olivera, put on a spectacular display of skill and coordination, while the majorette showed off her baton twirling skills.
The inauguration was concluded with a photo session of all the marching teams and teachers.
Fourth-year BSc (N) student Zeena D’Souza compeered the event. Third-year BSc (N) student Eami Joseph welcomed the gathering. First-year GNM student Laquisha delivered a vote of thanks.
Father Muller College of Nursing vice-principal Victoria D’Almeida, Father Muller School of Nursing principal Jasmine Sarita Vas, sports secretary Abin Kuria Kose, among others were present.
