Data Science and Data analytics, the next big thing in Information Science

Data analytics, Data science, and Machine learning have evolved from the term data processing. These dimensions of data processing are getting bigger every day. It is estimated that by 2020 the proportion of jobs in data analytics, data science, and machine learning will be 3x more than all other technical jobs. This is going to be a real gold mine for future professionals in the data analytics field.

Businesses need data scientists to analyse extremely unstructured data into something meaningful to bring in revenue and control costs. How does one become a data analyst? Before answering this question, let us try and understand what the terms Data analytics, Data science and Machine learning mean.

Data Science is the most important among the three. It summarise the concept of data processing. When a big data is cleansed, processed and analyzed to yield a result then the entire process is termed as data science and the person who does this is a data scientist. So does it take to become a data scientist? As a data scientist you are required to master the following skills: Strong knowledge of Python, SAS, R and other analytics languages, knowledge of cleaning unstructured data, SQL experience, understanding analytical functions, and graphs. The best way forward would be to take up an online data science course. If you have basic knowledge of java or high-level programming skills, you will be able to master the fundamentals of the course faster.

Data Analytics is simply the process of playing with the unstructured data to structure it, form patterns and analyze these patterns to form meaningful insights which later can be converted into business solutions. Here again, a data analyst should have a strong knowledge of data processing tools like R, SAS, Python and other analyzing tools and languages. He/she should be extremely comfortable in data juggling and should have a strong affinity towards numbers. Again how do you become a data analyst? Data analysis is a natural process of finding out patterns with some programming knowledge. But if you are someone new to programming take up an online data analytics course which will do the job for you.

Data science and Data analytics seemingly perform the same. Is there a difference between them? The answer is, Data science is the concept while data analytics is a subset of data science. Then what is machine learning? Machine learning is anything in which an algorithm is involved to conceptualize the data into parts and to form a pattern.

So let us keep the knowledge growing.
