Mangaluru: The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, St. Agnes College, organised “Chitrabani”, a short film screening and discussion session on February 26 at the college premises.
Associate Director of Harikatha Prasanga and scriptwriter, B A Samvartha inaugurated the event.
Short films feature a slice of life. They may not have multiple characters and may have a simple plot but they appeal to the common man, he opined. Explaining the history of short films, Samvartha spoke about how cinema began with short films and later grew out to be full feature films presented in all grandeur. “Short films were also used as a tool of propaganda during the Second World War”, he explained.
Commenting on the current scenario, Samvartha stated that the boom in Internet and Communication Technologies as well as the spread of social media had brought short films back in a big way with concepts that appealed to people.
The St. Agnes Department of Journalism and Mass Communication HoD, Laxmi Shenoy said that the event “Chitrabani”, as its names implied, celebrated cinema and also encouraged the audience to get involved in discussing the aesthetics of the films. Chitrabani aims to instill the taste of good cinema among the audience, she added.
Nine short films such as “Chorus”, “De Overkant”, “Bara Prate Lite”, “In a Heartbeat”, “The Lunch Date”, “The Affair”, “In the Shade of Fallen Chinaar”, “Khara Karodpati”, and “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, by eminent directors from Iran, Belgium, Sweden, USA, France and India were screened at the event.
After every short film screening, a discussion was held.
