Mangaluru: As a part of the ‘Agnes towards Community’ initiative, final-year BA students of St Agnes College visited the Munnur village in Kuthar on Saturday, August 17. The students surveyed the locality and spread awareness on ‘Solid Waste Management’.

Nearly 73 students were part of this exercise conducted under the guidance of the Department of Economics faculty members Sonal Jesma D’souza and Vinitha J Prabhu.

Students were divided into groups of 12 and each group visited around 10 to 12 houses. They asked several questions pertaining to waste management and surveyed the area accordingly.

The villagers were responsive to the students’ questions as they expressed problems regarding the improper disposal of waste near their homes. Although most of the villagers were aware of the segregation of waste, only a few of them were willing to adopt the method.

The activity gave the students an insight into modern-day community problems and proved to be a good learning experience.
