Despite having a population of more than a billion people, India still has a remarkably low internet penetration. According to surveys conducted by various bodies, only 41% of the entire population has access to high-speed internet. This means that of the 1.37 billion inhabitants of the country, only 500 million or so have access to the internet.

However, it is very interesting to note that despite having low internet penetration, India’s e-commerce industry is one of the largest in the world. In 2018, it was worth $48.5 billion and it’s projected to be worth over $200 billion in the next 5 years. Here are some of the most popular e-commerce stores in India, many of which are actually global in the scale of their influence and operations.

  1. Amazon India: When it comes to global e-commerce stores, Amazon India is definitely the leader. According to surveys conducted by Statista, this American e-commerce giant has a reach of 89% in the country. It has more than 320 million monthly visitors, which makes it the best performing e-commerce platform in the country. Apart from e-commerce staples like books and electronics, Amazon also offers products like Kindle, Alexa, Echo, etc.
  2. Flipkart: Flipkart is an Indian e-commerce platform that was started by two brothers – Sachin and Binny Bansal. It is probably the most successful e-commerce platform that has ever come out of India. Although Flipkart is far behind Amazon India, it still has a loyal base of customers and users. In 2018, the American multinational giant Walmart Inc. bought a 77% stake in the shares of the entire Flipkart platform.
  3. Alibaba: Founded by the visionary Jack Ma, Alibaba is one of the pioneers of e-commerce. It is one of the first Chinese e-commerce stores and it is incredibly popular all over the world. It is certainly very popular in India, where a large number of users prefer to buy apparel, electronics, stationery, etc. from Chinese manufacturers even though Flipkart and Amazon have a tight hold on the market now.
  4. DHgate.com: Speaking of global e-commerce platforms, it is impossible to forget the Dhgate Company. Officially launched in 2005, DHgate has remained as one of the most successful e-commerce and business-to-business platforms in the world. DHgate has actually grown to become one of the largest cross-border e-commerce chains in India and the world. Even though it is more popular in Eastern Asia, this platform has millions of Indian users.
  5. BookMyShow: BookMyShow is the largest ticket vendor in India. It has more than 40 million monthly users and it also has a loyal customer base. Apart from allowing individuals to buy tickets for movies, plays, live music shows, etc. BookMyShow also allows individuals to buy tickets to sporting events such as cricket matches, football matches, etc. Globally well-known firm TPG Growth is a major investor for the BookMyShow group.

These are only five of the most popular global e-commerce chains and platforms that are gaining a lot of ground in India. Presently, many Indians are choosing to purchase products from the safety and comfort of their own homes instead of choosing to venture outside.
