Vijayapura: With the Women and Child Welfare Department identifying three children in the district who have lost both parents while 289 children have lost a single parent (either mother or father) to Covid infection, the district administration has decided to extend all possible help to such children.
The children have been identified with the help of Asha and Aganwadi workers who have contacted each home where death has been reported due to Covid.
During the process, the Women and Child Welfare Department found a number of children who have become orphans or they have lost either mother or father to Covid.
Mentioning about three children who have lost both parents, Deputy Commissioner, P. Sunil Kumar said that as per their information, two children are from the same family. They have been looked after by their aunt. Another child who lost both parents, is being taken care of by the uncle.
He said that all possible help would be extended to such children through government benefits and welfare schemes for their better rehabilitation.
“Though we know that three orphan children are being taken care of by their relatives, however it is also the responsibility of the administration to keep monitoring them on a regular basis to check whether they are being treated well or not”, he said.
Sunil Kumar said that in case the guardians or single parent are not in a position to take care of the children, then the administration will take their responsibility of ensuring that the children get better rehabilitation which include accommodation and their schooling.
Though as per the present information, the district has three children become orphans due to Covid and 289 children have lost a single parent, however Sunil Kumar said it is possible that a few such children might have got missed from the list.
“If anybody comes across any such children who have either lost both parents or single parent and they have not been listed in the records, then information about such children could be given to the administration for including them in the list in order to give them required government benefits”, he added.
