Vijayapura: An alleged case of honor killing has come to light in the district where a couple has been allegedly murdered and their bodies have been found in a gory condition in a farm.

According to the police, the 18-year-old girl and 19-year-old boy were in love but since both of them belonged to different communities, the family of the girl is accused of killing the couple as they were against the relationship.

The deceased have been identified as Basavaraj Badiger and Davalbi Tambad, who were residents of the same village Saladhalli near Devara Hipparagi taluk.

The incident reportedly took place when Bandagisab Tambad, father of Davlabi, found his daughter with Basavaraj in a private farmland in the outskirts of the village on Tuesday evening.

Having lost his temper after seeing them together, Bandagisab immediately called up his relatives and allegedly attacked the couple. The angry members killed them both, the police said.

The police added that Davlabi and Basavaraj were in love for the past six months. A few days ago, Davlabi had revealed about her love affair before her parents, where they opposed it, reasoning that the boy belonged to the other community and restricted her from meeting Basavaraj. Amidst opposition, when Bandagisab found her daughter with her boyfriend – he purportedly killed both of them and fled from the spot.

The case has been registered at Kalakeri Police Station. SP Anupam Agrawal has visited the incident spot and inspected the area. However, no arrests have been made so far connected to the case.

Shreedhar Reddy, Deputy Superintendent of Police of Indi Sub-division, said that they have formed three teams to nab the accused. There are at least five suspects in this case including the father of an 18-year-old girl. We have not taken anyone into custody but interrogated the relatives of both the families and villagers.

“We are confident that we are likely to crack this case in the next 24 hours and investigation is underway,” said DSP Reddy.

Meanwhile, the relatives and various Dalit organisations have staged peaceful protest demanding justice for the deceased Basavaraj family at Dr B R Ambedkar circle in Sindagi on Wednesday. The family members have submitted a memorandum to the Tahsildar demanding the arrest of the accused in the earliest possible.
