Belagavi: In major strike, the district police nabbed sharp-shooters suspected to have strong links with the underworld.
After a face-off between the police and the sharp-shooters in District Hospital premises and exchange of fire between the two factions on Wednesday evening, the police emerged victorious over the six anti-social elements.
These shooters are said to be having links with don Ravi Poojary and had allegedly come to the city to help rowdy-sheeter Dinesh Shetty escape Hindalga Jail.
It is said that the police had prior information about the arrival of the six shooters in the city. Due to this security was beefed up at the residences and offices of the MPs, MLAs and other top officials as there were information that the shooters were targeting VIPs from the district. With reliable information about the lodge where the six were put up and about their movements, the police plunged into action.
Veera Madanreddi from Bengaluru, Avinash Marke and Amjad Sayyed from Mumbai, Mohommed Haneef and Abdul Kareem from Puttur were nabbed by the cops from District Hospital premises where sixth accused Tahir Hussein alias Anupam Gowda was nabbed from Belagavi Sambra Airport. Gulfaz, the seventh accused managed to flee.
It is said that the plan was to get Dinesh Shetty released by attacking the police when Shetty would be taken to the hospital. The arrested had five pistols, 29 live bullets, 15 mobiles, one car and several other weapons in their possession.
