Separate religion tag: Bhagwat urged to help Lingayat community cause

Belagavi: A massive rally was organised by members of the Lingayat community on Tuesday reiterating their demand for an independent religion status for their community.

Nearly two lakh people, including religious and political leaders participated in the rally demanding constitutional recognition for their religion. The participants pledged to continue their fight till its demand was met.

Notably all the speakers were critical of the statement made by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat recently asking the sangh workers to work for the unity of Veerashaiva and Lingayat by convincing them to drop their demand for a separate religion.

In his opening remarks, Basavaraj Horatti, JD(S) MLC opined that Bhagwat should refrain from interfering in affairs of Lingayats.

Other speakers too backed his opinion and questioned the silence maintained by the BJP leaders, including community strongman and state unit chief B.S. Yeddyurappa on the issue.

Basava Dharma Peetha seer Mathe Mahadevi urged Bhagwat to help their cause by speaking to Modi rather than derail their process. Reminding few of the BJP political leaders who got their party ticlets on the Lingayat quota, the seer stated that these leaders should remember their religion is Lingayatism and not BJP.

Further such rallies are planned to be held in Latur and Chitradurga in the month of September, Kalaburagi in October and in Mysuru in November.

Interestingly the BJP has leaders as also seers identified with the Veerashaiva community and mutts remained absent from the rally
