Belagavi: The Belagavi police, acting on a complaint filed by members of the Mukti Dham Seva Mandal burial ground have started a look-out for a couple who it is alleged trying to bury an infant girl alive.

The incident took place on Monday when the couple along with three others had come to the burial ground to perform the last rites of a two-month-old baby girl. However, as they were digging the pit, the on-duty staff at the burial ground noticed that the baby, who was wrapped in a white cloth was making some movements and confronted the couple.

The couple argued with them that the baby was indeed dead and the same had been confirmed by the doctors. The Mukti Dham Seva Mandal burial ground members, however, did not budge and asked the couple to leave the premises as they would not allow for a baby to be buried alive.

Speaking to media persons Seva Mandal member Vijay Sawant who was on duty that day has raised doubts that the case would probably pertain to female infanticide or part of a black magic ritual and that there was a possibility that the couple would have gone to some other nearby burial ground. He provided information that the couple had come in a car and suggested that the police should study CCTV footage to trace them since the Seval Mandal did not have a record of the names or addresses of the visitors.

Meanwhile, the police have started inquiries with shop owners and other possible witnesses on the approach roads to the grounds.
