Belagavi: Dr Prabhakar of the KLE institutions, successfully operated on a 20-day old child who was born with the heart on the right side in Basavana Baagewaadi Taluk of the Vijayapur district.

Normally, the human heart is situated in the centre of the chest, but this baby’s heart was on the right side of the body.

According to sources, the child was finding it difficult to breathe right from the time of its birth. When the doctors examined the baby, they found that all internal organs of the baby were interchanged. All the organs that were supposed to be on the right side were on the left and vice-versa, causing the baby breathing problems.

Later, the baby was taken to a private hospital in Bagalakote for further check-up, where the doctors confirmed that the child had a rare case of situs inversus totalis with dextrocardia and the troposcopy of the great arteries. The doctors, after examining the baby, told the family that a surgery was necessary to save the child’s life, said sources.

The child, weighing 2.5 kilograms, underwent a 9-hour long surgery performed by a team of expert doctors led by Dr Praveen Thambralli Muttha and Dr Nikunja Vyasa. The doctors later confirmed that the operation was successful and that the child can now breathe freely, added the sources.

Situs inversus totalis with dextrocardia and the troposcopy of the great arteries is a condition that is characterised by the abnormal positioning of the heart and other internal organs and as yet, the condition does not have a known cause.
