Belagavi: The coalition partners Congress and Janata Dal (S) have unanimously chosen MLC Pratap Chandra Shetty of Udupi district as the chairman of the legislative council. The choice was made at a meeting held here on Tuesday, 11 December 2018.
Basavaraj Horatti is officiating as pro term speaker of the Council and the new chairman will be sworn in tomorrow, on December 12 if no one else fields candidate for the post.
From 1983 to 1999, Shetty was continuously a member of legislative assembly from Kundapur and from 2003 till now he is the member of legislative council.
Pratap Chandra Shetty was born on September 4, 1949 to Huyyaru Patel Heriyanna Shetty and Kolkebail Gulabi Shetty. He served Vijaya Bank at Pune and Shivamogga. After his father passed away, Pratap Chandra Shetty, a BA graduate resigned from the banking service and took to agriculture in his home village.
Later, he joined the Indian National Congress and began his political life. He has been the president of Youth Congress, Kundapura, District Youth Congress general secretary, district president and vice president of KPCC and member of AICC.
